I am apparently...

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 16, 2011, 8:41 AM
A bad artist.

According to today's standards. And I'm somone who has come to doubt the concept of time, as that in itself was a human creation.

I enjoy photo realism. I like taking time with the technicality of it. I think it's a little more magical than just snapping a photo of someone.

I've learned this from a few people, mostly professors at my university. Although there was one that actually enjoyed what I did (Fedja Soretic, that man is so kind), and he's a renowned artist in Europe. He said my painting reminded him of Toulouse Lautrec, and that he was quite impressed with my drawing skills.

I know photo-realism is....old, in style. But learning that you're a bad artist after all the effort is a little hard to take. But, what can ya do?

All in all, it does depress me a bit. But oh well. I know my stuff looks well enough, so that's all that matters, I suppose.

::sigh::

I am not posting this fishing for compliments. I have already received plenty of those, both in text and in person, although they've become more difficult to accept. I am merely posting some thoughts. That is all.

Maybe you'd rather have the advice of a random person :D

Just checked out your gallery, especially the drawings, and they are fantastic :D i'm a wannabe realistic drawer but your stuff makes me want to break my pencil in 2 :D

You're very, very, very talented and it would be a shame to let such talent go to waste whoever said you're a bad artist is just jealous.

I am a bit disturbed to hear this kind of thinking. I know I am one to talk, everyone bristles when their babies are questioned, but there is NOTHING wrong with your art. You have a beautiful style, and you are very good at it. No compliments or sugar on top, just cold, hard fact. Your portraits of people are just beautiful, and unless the person who made you start questioning this is paying you for a picture that wasn't exactly the way he wanted it, you can tell him to ******. You enjoy these works yes? You enjoy your own style of art, and how you choose to explore your creative eye and how to exercise/exorcise it. That's all that matters. What I tell you, your proffessors tell you, the bag lady on the street, whatever, that you enjoy doing it, and are happy with the work is what matters, because the rest is all perspective, and no one has the right to question that. Have heart and keep creating!!! I want to see some new fabulous work from you! :hug:

Thanks. :blush: The thought to just stop drawing never crossed my mind. Sorry if I gave the impression. It can just get tiring to hear you can't have a classic style to be considered an artist anymore. I consider myself a portrait artist. And I'd like to expand to drawing full bodies, too. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing and just try to learn to ignore others' notions.
Thanks again. :)

I read this over a few times...again, if you will for big brother, what specifically lead you such a thought...something some professors said?

Well, things I learned from my professors has been in my mind for a few years now. It was more so something I saw posted by a friend of mine, saying something against imitation in artwork. I pointed out how I like to imitate realism with portraits and he said that was a big no no. I'm not mad at him or anything. It was just a little disheartening hearing something like that from someone who has given me compliments on my work before. He has a right to his opinion. It's just me that has the problem, lol.

I would honestly say that you're not a bad artist. I'm not trying to flatter you or anything, but I think you have great talent, both in photographing and drawing. Plus, someone once said that you're an artist when you say you are. I think that you deserve much more attention, so I often feature your pictures because I really really like them. And I guess that's also something to be happy about, even though you're not professional, you make others happy because of your pictures. At least that's what makes me keep drawing.

Being a "good" artist is very individual. If I for example compare myself to some of the best artists on dA, I'm not a good artist. But if I compare myself to many others here on dA, I'm pretty good. I don't believe that there's a point where you suddenly go from being a bad artist to being a good artist. :shrug:
